The theme of survival exists on multiple levels in Life Hutch VR. Mankind is struggling to defend itself and defeat the enemy at any cost. The life hutches are built to be a safe haven for soldiers in need of rescue. Technician Suresh Patel becomes trapped in a life hutch and tries everything possible to preserve his sanity and escape. Captain Terrence’s well-being is challenged at every step of his journey and he never gives up.
Our goal from the beginning has been to produce something special and innovative using emerging virtual reality technology. VR has allowed us to put the user inside the story in a way previously impossible and breathed new life into a tale written over 50 years ago by Harlan Ellison. In the time it has taken to complete Life Hutch VR, the theme of survival and perseverance in the face of adversity has only become more relevant, and as one of the characters says:
“Living creatures are hard wired to survive no matter what. They never seem to give up and you know we won’t.”
